Qalam Qabeela
Qalam Qabeela fosters team spirit and keeps students motivated to do well inside and outside of the classroom. Students are divided into 5 Qabeela (Groups) that spells QALAM. The seniors/juniors are the leaders of each Qabeela and will lead a team of mixed grades to several tasks throughout the year.
The Qabeela’s are:
- Qurtuba
- Anatolia
- Lina
- Andulus
- Mosul
Every year, students rotate into different Qabeela. Last year’s winning Qabeela was Qurtuba
SGA
Al-Qalam Academy’s Student Government Association (SGA)
A place where any student can voice his or her opinions and concerns.
Description
The SGA represents the student body through popular election. This body serves as a collective voice of the students in student affairs, academic, safety, and other various areas. One of the primary functions of the SGA is to approve the formations of the new organizations and to provide funding so the interest of every student group is represented.
Purpose
The purpose of Al-Qalam’s Student Government Association is:
- To provide a forum for the expression of student views and interests;
- To provide leadership in the areas of cooperation and understanding among all students;
- To facilitate student rights, views, and interests;
- To endeavor and to provide adequate funding for programs affecting extracurricular activities;
- To coordinate student political life with other student groups and organizations.
Membership Requirements
The Student Government Association (SGA) represents the student body; any student who is currently registered at Al-Qalam Academy is eligible to vote in student government elections.
The MIST
MIST stands for the Muslim Interscholastic Tournament. MIST is an educational, interactive program of competitions and workshops geared toward bringing the high school students together from around the nation to develop leadership, communication, and other creative skills in order to develop a strong identity.
Our mission is to bring the high school students together to develop leadership, promote communication, and inspire creativity while gaining a deeper understanding of Islam and Muslims. We do this through our annual regional and national tournaments. MIST was founded in 2002 by an undergraduate freshman girl in Houston, Texas, and now takes place in 15 regions across North America.
We are dedicated to empowering the high school students by giving them a venue to:
- Develop confidence and professionalism by practicing presentation, public speaking, and problem-solving skills
- Meet and network with diverse peers who share the same talents and interests
- Express their thoughts and ideas through various creative mediums
- Learn strategies to deal with stereotypes and prejudices against Islam and Muslims
Al-Qalam Academy MIST Soccer/BasketBall
This club promotes and develops an interest in soccer and/or basketball among the athletic students by sponsoring, organizing, and operating competitive and developmental programs.
Photography
A type of art, science, application, and practice of creating durable images by capturing light and electromagnetic radiation.
The students will learn how to master the art of taking pictures of their surroundings with a deeper meaning.
Al-Qalam Academy Debate Club
The term “debate” is used for a particular formal style in a competitive or educational context. This is where students will split into two groups to compete through six rounds of argument. By giving persuasive speeches on a particular topic and boosting their confidence, they are able to state their opinions in a proper manner and learn about the conflicts around them.
Art Club
Art is an activity that provides materials, instructions, and support for the students who are seeking a creative outlet in addition to their academic schedule.
STEAM
STEAM is a gathering of students that meet regularly in an informal environment to work on inquiry-based activities that are related to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math.
